ARTWORK
From an early age, Francis has shown exceptional skill in drawing, painting and sculpting. When he was 12 his Franciscan grandmother, Carmen Cruz, approached him and requested he restore a St. Francis of Assisi image from the Cathedral Dulce Nombre de Jesus, in the city of Caguas, that had fallen and broken in a procession. This project gave Francis recognition and he went on to restoring many other religious images, ranging from paintings to stained glass and sculptures. González is also known for his mastery of ink and markers, and is often compared to Escher and Tim Burton in his style. Preferring simple media on traditional surfaces, he creates effects that fool the viewer into thinking it’s something much more complex or modern in technique.
